OCTOBER 29, 2005
The Detroit Rhythmic Rollers' Skate-O-Ween party, Bonaventure Skating Rink, Farmington Hills, Mich.
It might have been a scene out of "The Wiz," except the scarecrow was hitting slides in the corner. It might have been something from "Phantom of the Opera," except the phantom was coming down the middle of a Soul Train line.
It was a Halloween-themed skating party, one of several a year thrown by a group of hardcore skaters known as the Detroit Rhythmic Rollers.
African American roller skating has deep roots across the country, but it's something to behold in Detroit. Skaters teach one another and build on a vocabulary of moves that's decades old. At Skate-O-Ween, there were folks from Ohio, Chicago, D.C. and California skating in their own styles.
Ruck said he felt a little lukewarm about these pictures, that he might've taken some better shots if he could've gone out on the floor. But that wasn't gonna happen. Something about "falling and busting my ass."
We think the pictures are fine. And we will be standing there with a camera the day Ruck puts on some skates.
